Chapter 10

“Marriage is a mosaic you build with your spouse. Millions of tiny moments that create your love story.” - Jennifer Smith

DIRK

A vise locked around his head from the moment he emerged from the lifepod. Ex-fil and re-entry were not the most pleasant experiences, but rarely were they this bad. He staggered toward the sink, fighting against the lances of blinding pain stabbing at his eyes. Gripping the edge of the counter, he braced his legs against the waves. Most of the time, it passed quickly.

The whisper of movement behind him wrenched him around. The blur of the figure before him was as familiar to him as his own face. Blinking against the pain, he waited for her curvy figure to come into focus. It was the contemplative expression on her face which arrested him as the haziness passed.

“You’re in pain,” she murmured, approaching him only after his gaze locked on hers.

Extending an arm, he pulled her to him. The warmth of her softer figure against his a welcome balm to his troubled soul. The others didn’t have the issues with the transition that he did. Not that potential bouts with psychosis would ever stop him from being where she needed him.

“I’ve dealt with worse,” he promised her. Too many worries already weighed her down, or she wouldn’t be waiting in his suite for him. “Had I known you were here…”

Valda feathered her fingers over his lips, quieting him. Blink by blink, clarity returned to his vision, and the frown tightening her brow sent a bolt of tension to his spine. Since the launch of this new construct, he hadn’t spent significant time with her, but he’d been monitoring the situation as best as he’d been able.

“Do you trust me?” The question would have put him on guard, if he weren’t already hyper aware of the woman in his arms. It was as though she vibrated at a slightly different frequency, and it grated against his senses. Something was wrong. A sweep of his gaze over the room confirmed they were alone.

“Yes.” Not even a question he had to consider for any length. “What happened?”

“A lot, and not enough.” The vagueness wasn’t like her. She usually relied on specificity to avoid any kind of misunderstanding. Stroking his fingers through her hair, he pushed it away from her face. Tension deepened the lines at the corners of her eyes and dug grooves where she tried to smile. It was her eyes which truly betrayed her, the honey-amber tone had darkened, and not even a glint of laughter reflected in their depths.

“What can I do?” He could demand answers, sweep her into his arms, and tease her until she told him everything. Or he could deal with the problem head on. She was waiting for him, ergo she needed him. “Point me where you want me to go, and it’s done.”

A shudder rippled over her, and then she rose on her tip toes to wrap her arms around his neck. Dipping to accommodate, he lifted her until she fit against him, safe in the shelter of his arms.
